For Discussion Question #3, I’d like students to review a film and comment on it.

To access the film, go to:   Click on “Find a Database.”  Then, click on “F.”  Next, click on: “Films on Demand.”  Then, in the searchbox, enter the title: “Soviet Disunion: Ten Years that Shook the World.”  Watch the 56-minute documentary and answer the following questions:

  1. In your view, after reviewing the film, what were the strengths and weaknesses of Gorbachev, as well as his reform program?
  2. Same question, as per Yeltsin and his agenda.
  3. Which leader do you think was more effective?
  4. What was the most important impediment to reform, on either person’s part? (Gorbachev or Yeltsin, your choice)
  5. What were some of the thorniest issues in the foreign policy realm that either man had to confront?  (Again, your choice as to whether you wish to discuss the Gorbachev or Yeltsin era here.)
